Amplifier Model Does tube brand matter as much as proper tube models when purchasing new vacuum tubes for a guitar amplifier?
Just curious if paying the extra for Groove Tubes, or any other major brand tube will change and better my sound that much?
It will likely make a difference.
If a producer makes 1000 "identical" tubes, you'll going to find they are not "identical" if you check every one of them. The manufacturing and component variances pretty much dictate this. While all of them will "work", only a small percentage will have specs that are right in the "sweet spot" that gives you the best tone.
Groove Tubes doesn't make tubes -- what they do is check vast batches of tubes looking for those in the "sweet spot". Those few tubes become "Groove Tubes". They cost more because many tubes are eliminated during the process -- which drives the cost up.
So -- you could buy generic tubes and they'll sound good. You might luck out and get some that are matched enough to sound great. Or, you could buy Groove Tubes and be pretty much guaranteed you'll get tubes that sound fantastic.
