Harman Kardon Could my Harman Kardon receiver be causing floor speaker distortion?
I have a 10 year old Harman Karon receiver that I had hooked up to a pair of infinity speakers. A few months ago I noticed that my right speaker was distorted. I thought it might have been blown out due to its age. Today I hooked up brand new Sony floor speakers and low and behold, the right speaker is still distorted! Could my receiver be the problem? Any suggestions?
Isolate the problem. Does it happen on all sources? FM too? Make sure that everything is connected well as a first step. There is also a potential problem with dirty contacts in the controls. Any control could cause this. Push all the buttons and switches back and forth to see whether or not it improves. If you hear a crackling sound, that is a dead giveaway.
Speaker polarity has nothing to do with distortion. It simply makes the speakers work "against" each other, which causes a funky soundstage plus causes bass output to drop.
If all these fail, it could be a bad amp, but that is the last thing I would suspect. I have some 40 year old electronics that still work flawlessly, and I think 10 is too young. However, 10 year old stuff is outdated - you can get a lot more out of today's receivers.
