I have a CAVS karaoke Player hooked up to my tv ( it looks like a dvd player.. ) but anyways...
is there a recording device that I can purchase that hooks up to it, and will allow me to record myself singing on it? record Onto a cd?
thanks
There are several small portable, battery powered flash memory recorders which will work for this job. The Zoom H2 and the Edirol R-09 are two examples. The cost will be around $200 to $350.
You can also use a desktop or laptop computer with sound recording software such as Audacity or one of the many other freeware programs. This will be much cheaper, but a little less convenient.
Since you describe your CAVS as similar to a DVD player, I will assume that it is a component style CD-G player. These normally connect to the video input of your television, and also connect to either a stereo system or the TV audio input.
You will need patchcords to connect the CAVS to the recorder.
Assuming the audio output of the CAVS is an RCA plug ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector ), which is likely, you will need to purchase two RCA-type Y-connector patchcords. Each Y-connector cord should have one RCA plug and two RCA jacks (receptacles) on it.
You will also need a stereo cable with two RCA plugs one one end, and and 1/8" stereo mini-phone plug on the other. The mini-phone plug connects to your recorder or computer.
If this doesn't make sense, just take your CAVS player to a good electronics shop (or even a Radio Shack . Tell them what you want to do. If you are going to use the computer, tell them. If you are going to use a portable flash recorder instead of the computer, take it along with you when you go.
It will also help to buy a pair of headphones you can plug into the recorder or computer, if you don't already have some. (For the computer, disconnect the speakers and plug in your headphones.) This will let you turn down the speakers and listen to yourself while you record, to make sure the recording is working OK.
Here is how to connect the recorder.
Plug each of the Y-connectors between the CAVS and the audio cables now going into it. These plugs will most likely be red and white. Don't do anything with the yellow plug - that is for video.
Then plug the RCA plugs on the end of the stereo cable into the remaining jacks of the Y-connectors. Match up the colors, red to red, and white to white.
Plug the 1/8" plug into your new recorder's LINE input, or else into your computer sound card LINE input.
Follow the directions with the recorder, or your sound recording software, to begin recording.
Start your karaoke CD and sing a bit, then check your recording. You will probably have to adjust the record volume on the recorder or computer, until the sound is loud enough (but not so loud that it gets fuzzy, broken-up, or distorted).
Once you've successfully recorded your song onto the recorder, you can transfer it to your computer (see the instructions with the recorder), and burn it to a CD. It should appear on the computer as a file with the extension ".wav" or ".mp3".
For burning you can use Roxio, Nero, or whatever CD-burning software you prefer. (On a Mac, you can use Itunes for burning CDs.) In most cases, you just start the program, tell it to make an audio CD, and drag the .wav or .mp3 file you recorded into the CD-burning program.
