Tech Magic
In a gaming universe how can guns amd technology coexisting with swords and magic?
Hey guys,
Just want to have some open discussion on how you figure guns/tech can coexist in the same gaming universe as swords/magic.
For example the Final Fantasy games, like number 7, where Barret and the Shinra guards all have fully automatic machine guns and Cloud gets a sword.
I understand why they chose this way, it wouldn't be very fun if they were all lugging around m16's through Midgar, but i'm looking more at the story element.
For example::
~ Very limited gunpowder in the world
~ Firearms are hard to come by
~ Firearms are illegal, maybe only possessed by the worlds military
~ Swords have a pocket where you can store your spare change
~ etc
Anything is welcome, the floor is open, use your imaginations..
Well FF7 is in the distant future where some technology is found. The game's setting follows in the footsteps of Final Fantasy VI by presenting a world with considerably more advanced technology than the first five games in the series. Overall, the game's technology and society approximates that of near-future science fiction. The world of Final Fantasy VII, retroactively named "Gaia" but referred to in the game as "The Planet", is composed of three main land masses. The eastern continent features the city of Midgar, an industrial metropolis that serves as the headquarters of the Shinra operating as the de facto world government. Other locations on the continent are Junon, Shinra's major military base; Fort Condor, a fort with a huge condor covering up a Mako reactor on top of it; a chocobo ranch; and Kalm, a small town inspired by medieval Europe.
The western continent features most of the accessible areas, which include the Gold Saucer, an amusement park; Costa Del Sol, a seaside resort; Nibelheim, a town residing at the base of Mt. Nibel; Rocket Town, the location of Shinra's failed rocket launch; and a settlement called Cosmo Canyon. Wutai, a village inspired by pre-modern Japan and China, is located on a large island off the western continent. The tribe inhabiting Cosmo Canyon emphasize living in harmony with nature and dedicating causes to the planet's well-being. Their settlement features an observatory and serves as a research facility for those who wish to participate in a philosophy known as the "Study of Planet Life", a lifestyle that encourages deference for nature and teaches that the planet has a life of its own. The northernmost continent is a heavily glaciated wasteland, and its few settlements include an excavation site; a ski resort; the mythical "City of the Ancients"; and the Northern Crater, where the game's climax takes place. There are also underwater locations accessible via submarine, such as a sunken plane transporter.

It's easy to be envious of the old days in business. I thought about that recently.
Back in the day, as we say, an executive had merely to press the buzzer on his intercom for the desired file folder to appear on his desk. While having someone around to find the needed files would be quite handy, it would be really frustrating to wait for someone to type up something on the old Royal typewriter and bring me a carbon copy for changes. That part I don't envy.
With computers and printers, everything is so much faster for me than the executive of yesterday – except for one big thing. I can't find my files and I don't have a buzzer.
Sure the company maintains a large file system for things like patents, human resources, finances and completed client projects. That doesn't really help me. What I really need are the notes I took at the planning meeting last spring. I'd also like to find the samples the vendor sent a year ago before we scraped the project. Now we are bringing it back to life, and quickly. I'm sure it's somewhere. After wishing for the buzzer of the 1960's to appear and failing to get one, I decided I needed a higher tech answer for my low-tech problem of lost papers.
My frustration led me to find The File Harmonic. This online software lets you create a database for any files, papers, folders or file cabinet you already own. I was able to create file headings for all the major aspects of my job. Then I created sub-headings for each of those headings.
Since The File Harmonic uses keyword technology and most important, it uses keywords that I have assigned to each file, it matches the way I think. At a moment's notice, I can put my hands on anything I have filed. The File Harmonic assigns file numbers to the file folders that I listed in the software as I create a database for my personal files. I simply numbered my folders with the assigned number and place it in my file drawer. Anytime I need something, I can now search by keyword – such as, spring planning meeting, vendor name, product name and so forth.
You can try The File Harmonic with a free 30-day trial version. There's no magic buzzer on my desk but it has been like having an administrative assistant in my computer.
