Digital Surround
Is digital surround sound better than analog surround?
I am setting up a home theatre with surround sound. Should I use a digital audio connection or the standard rca connection for audio? I only have 2 front and 2 rear speakers right now. The digital connection is much louder than the rca connection. Are there drawbacks to using digital cable for surround sound?
First...component video and HDMI video are no better than each other other than the fact that component is not HDCP compliant and will not pass 1080p from an HDCP source. Second...two good front speakers can matrix the center channel using stereo imaging and give you 90% of the feel of an actual center channel (depends on the receiver too).
If you are using analog audio in from your Bluray, DVD or CD player that has stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 audio outputs into your receivers analog inputs you would be using your players onboard decoder (for surround sound) and digital to analog converter (DAC). If your receiver has a better DAC it may sound better.
If you use HDMI you skip the DAC and pass the signal to your receiver decoded, or for the receiver to decode if it can process the bitstream.
If you are using coaxial or optical then you also bypass the DAC in the player just like HDMI but you would not be able to pass the lossless audio formats as they require more bandwidth than the cable can handle.
As for the volume difference the analog audio is just coming in at a lower level so it needs more amplification. Some receivers allow you to adjust the preamp boost for analog audio.
In the end it really all boils down to what you think sounds better. A one cable solution can be easier and create less clutter behind your equipment. Separate component systems (ie: prepro and amps) use analog outputs and they are touted as being very good. Of course then it all depends on the components.
The AmazonBasics TOSLINK Digital Audio Optical Cable helps you connect audio components when clear sound quality is your priority. This digital audio TOSLINK cable can be used to connect your CD and DVD players, digital satellite, and more to your preamplifier, receiver, audio processors, and digital-to-analog converters (DACs)...

Analog TV transmission is out. That era is over and most broadcasters are switching over to the digital format. Compared to analog TV the HD TV is a huge improvement in picture, sound and total output. The bandwidth of the analog TV channel restricts the resolution and quality of the image. In the digital format, data is transmitted as bits of information just as in a computer. Broadcasters have the option of including or adding more features, such as surround sound, multiple language audio, text services, and more in the same space now occupied by a standard analog TV signal. Anybody buying a TV has to think about where to place it. Though the earlier models of TV are big and bulky and occupy more space the LCD, plasma and LED TVs are flat screened and thinner then the older versions.
As much as buying a TV is important the way it should be mounted or placed could have a say on the viewing. There are TV stands and wall mounts to hang your TV on the wall or any where you choose. It would be better to go for a wall mount that has the option to let you adjust the angle of the screen, whether manually or using a remote for the purpose. All glares and outside disturbance that might disturb your TV viewing can be eliminated if you have a Vogels wall mount with tilt and turn.
