The layout of the interior of your music store includes some major decisions which will have an impact down the road on your costs, revenues, and the basic safety of the location. These are three principles of store layout to consider, whether you draw up the interior floor plan yourself, or use the help of an interior designer or architect.
Waiting Line
If your store is as successful as you hope, you will probably have waiting lines from time to time. For example, if you expect an average of ten purchases per hour, you will see some hours with purchases of twenty or more orders (maybe limited only by the capacity of your clerk or clerks to process the transactions). There will certainly be a waiting line at times like this, and you must think through where that line will begin, whether you will use multiple lines or only one, how it will snake, and how you will designate where the lines are so that customers are clear on the system.
Customer Flow
If your store is based on wide selection and the efficiency of the purchase process, you may want a layout within which customers can find their CD of choice as quickly as possible and beeline to the register. However, if you believe you will encourage additional sales through browsing by ensuring that customers pass by other music and advertisements, you may prefer a layout which requires customers to flow through the entire store. The more two-way customer traffic you expect within an aisle, the wider you should make them to allow customers to pass each other.
Legal Requirements
Finally, there are simply certain legal requirements which you cannot neglect, or do so at the risk of endangering your customers (in the event of a fire or emergency) and your store (of being shut down or fined even without an emergency). The width of aisles, clearance in front of exit doors, and the need for an alternate exit are requirements to consider before getting too creative in your floor planning.
