The voltage from the microphone you talk into is amplified. That amplified audio frequency signal is used to modulate the frequency of an 800 mHz oscillator, which sends the FM radio signal thru the ether to the base station. From there it may go via optical fibers to a regional station or directly from the base station to a satellite. The satellite goes to another regional station or base station; it may first go to another satellite for long distance calls. The second base station sends a different frequency radio signal to the receiver. There is also some encoding and decoding to prevent mixing up calls with the wrong cell phones.
