What is the difference between analog and digital on a wireless phone & how do I change from one to the other?
I have a Verizon Wireless cell phone and at the top of the phone, an A in a box comes up when it's in Analog. When it's in Digital, a 1x comes up in a box. What is this?
Analog and Digital (1x) technologies are two different cell tower technologies. Analog is an older technology that can be used only for making calls. If I remember correctly, I believe Analog coverage spreads further than Digital but, Digital coverage allows you to do things like text messaging, browsing the internet, sending MMS messages, and different multimedia things like that and there is a better voice quality with Digital than with Analog. Generally, you would want to stay on Digital, but your phone will automatically switch to Analog coverage if there is no alternative.
It is different for every phone, but you can manually change to Analog technology if it is available (I am not sure why you would want to). On my Nokia phone, you go:
Menu>Settings>Network, down to Mode, hit Select and choose Analog only.
Once again, unless you have a peticular reason you want to use Analog towers, I would stick with Digital!
