I decided to get my boyfriend speakers for his 21st because he has really been wanting some. He purchased a Yamaha reciever (rxv361BL - 5.1 channel) over Christmas break. Right now I am trying to decide between: Polk RM 705 system, JBL CS480 BG or Yamaha P320. I know that these are all "starter" speakers but he lives in a small apartment and will for awhile so he won't need anything too big. I am just unsure at what brand to get. Here are the websites for the speakers. THANKS!
First of all, I commend you for your generosity in doing this for him.
As to your choices, I would go with the Polk or the JBL over the Yamaha, for speakers. Just as some companies make better receivers than cassette decks, there are some companies that make great receivers, but only good speakers.
Now, if you are in the US, I have a suggestion for you. Theres a Polk 5.1 speaker system thats pretty close to the 705 system, thats going on amazon for under half list price.
Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System (Set of Six, Black), list price $599.95. Selling for $228.23 plus $28.49 for shipping. No sales tax if not going to NY State. Or, $226.08 plus $35.00 shipping. They have several buying choices.
They have your JBL model for $336.99, plus US free shipping, list price $799. They also have the Polks that you are looking at for $419.15 plus $28.49 shipping, list price of $599.
If you get the Polk 6750s, the ones I suggested, you'll get as good a set as the ones you listed, for at least $90 less than the JBLs, and for about $190 less than the Polks you looked at. I think that the 6750s would be a very good match for his receiver.
