Can I use a 5 channell stereo reciever to power a 6 pair multiroom speaker system in my home? ?
I have an older Harmon/Kardon reciever Avr120. It has 5 channels w/40watts per channel. Is it possible to power up 5 additional pairs of speakers in my new home by using this reciever with an appropriate speaker distributor? I am not going to blast the roof off but I will be using the home to entertain guest and what not. Can this work or do I need to invest into a 7 channel system ? thanks
Sure. Just make sure that either your distribution (speaker switcher, distribution hub, whatever) or your in-wall volume controls are all impedance matched. This is very important otherwise you could and probably will toast your amp. The other important thing is NOT use any of the surround sound programs available on the HK, as it will often remove center channel information from the right and left channels to be sent to a dedicated speaker if you're trying for surround and will often add extraneous information if your using an artificial surround field setting. If your using it as a surround sound receiver in one room and trying to add sound to four other rooms, you could purchase an inexpensive stereo only receiver and use an tape out or other unused output on the HK to create a suitable input for it and it wouldn't have adverse effects on the surround sound in your main room.
