White Speakers
why are non-white spanish speakers called hispanic?
phonetically, the word hispanic is the same as words like britannic, slavic, gallic, germanic, etc. it's in that set of terms.
not to sound racist, because of course i'm not and i have no problems with anyone, BUT; you would never call a non-white person speaking russian 'slavic', or call a non-white person who grew up in germany speaking german 'germanic', so why does 'hispanic' include all spanish speakers of various backgrounds, rather than only include ethnic spanish people who are of european descent?
you don't hear jamaicans, canadians, australians, nigerians, and americans called 'britannic' because they speak english, so 'hispanic' should not be used to classify people based on language. the term shouldn't exist, it's confusing and ties together a group of people so diverse into one group.
i don't believe most hispanics are of actual spanish descent. jennifer lopez, jessica alba, george lopez could NEVER pass for a european spanish person.
B/c they are from latin American countries. I say those out the word. They're white for crying out loud, well most, just white people who speak one of the latin languages (I believe Spanish and Brazilians speak Portugese.)
I think society just doesn't want to recognize them as white, when majority are.
