Laptops are becoming more and more popular as they replace the standard desktop computer. Falling prices and technological improvements will make laptop sales outrank desktop sales for the first time in 2008. But as the numbers in laptop sales grow numbers of notebook theft also increase dramatically. This article tries to show you ways to keep your laptop safe from theft.
1. Notebook Computer Lock: A notebook computer lock works similar to a bicycle lock. You attach one end of the lock to your laptop and warp the cord around a fixed piece of furniture. All laptops provide a slot for notebook computer locks. One of the most common is the Kensington slot. In most cases it is located at the side of your laptop and marked with a small lock sign. Other types of locks fit directly into the VGA port of your machine. Find out which kind of notebook computer lock suits you best.
2. Laptop Alarms: Now that your laptop is physically secured with a notebook computer lock you should make it theft-proof on the software side. There are lots of programs out there that transform your machine into a fully-blown alarm system. Your computer already has speakers why not use them against possible thieves. Some programs use your laptop's built-in motion detector to know when your notebook is moved. Others blare your gadget's horns when the power cord or a USB device is unplugged. A handy tip for library visitors is to mount a library DVD or CD into your drive. When a thief tries to escape with your laptop the library's security gates notice the disc an sound the alarm.
3. Retrieval: There are great programs out who can detect the IP address of your stolen laptop and show it on a Google map. Those programs can also delete sensitive data on your machine the moment the thief logs onto the internet. Software like this can be you last guard against identity theft if your machine is already stolen.
In my opinion securing your laptop on the software side is a great way to keep your data and identity safe. But first and foremost you have to secure your machine physically. A notebook computer lock really is essential for everyone who wants to keep his laptop and data on the safe side.
