In general Bose speakers are mediocre at best ... and highly overpriced. They aim their massive advertising budget at the gullible. I personally wouldn't touch Bose.
Bose get the sound they do (reasonable highs, but inferior midrange) from such small speakers only because the incoming signal is massively equalized. As far as I'm aware both of these sets of double cube speakers, while they could be connected to any surround amp, are essentially useless without the equalizer that is built into the bass module which is intended to be part of the system (but apparently isn't included). So, I'd definitely avoid both.

There are MANY good alternatives to Bose. See the 2nd link for some recommended options at various price ranges ... some even less expensive than the $500 range you are apparently considering.
