Roller Cassette

Roller Cassette
I have a JVC HR-S9500U VCR that appears to be stuck in the middle of a procedure and will not respond.?

It was fast-forwarding in Timescan mode when it just shut down by itself. Pushing power button results in unit staying on for 3-4 seconds and then turning off again. Tried to reset cpu by unplugging for 30 or more seconds then plugging back in with no success. I had to open unit and remove cassette tape manually at which time mechanism (spindles, pinch roller, basket) returned to proper unloaded position but still no response to commands and same situation with power only staying on a few seconds when power button pushed. When first plugged in unit should not power on by itself as it is doing ( Auto [Plug & Play] should appear in display only) which it does after the power shuts off in 3-4 seconds. This is further evidence to me that vcr is locked in some task it can't complete and therefore shuts itself off. Advancing gears on cassette spindles either forward or back has no effect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this has been a great vcr until now. Thanks.

When a VCR powers-off after a couple seconds like that, it has a mechanical error. In most VCR's these days, there are only two electric motors (three if you count the spinning play head) and a very complicated gear-and-cam system to perform the loading and tape handling. Somewhere along the line, something slipped or didn't fully engage and one of the gears slipped a couple cogs. The result is that the VCR really isn't sure what position it's in (and it shuts down rather than damage itself). To get it to work, you have to manipulate all the little pieces so that the mechanism is in its fully unloaded position.

Needless to say, this is very difficult. When I had this problem, I had two identical VCR's so I could always use the second one as a model.

One thing that I used to do (and no guarantees this will work for you) was to have the machine plugged in with the case off and manually advance the motor until the rollers which extend the tape out to the play heads and pinch roller just begin to move -- i.e.: just to the point where it would trigger the tape-inserted procedure. (Be alert, because if you do trigger that things will start moving in there.) With it it very close to that threshold, everything was lined up so that if I then inserted a tape, it was ready to accept it.

Hope that helps. (Don't sue me if it doesn't!)
