* Large file-sharing applications (LimeWire, BitTorrent, etc.)
* Online gaming MMORPG's (World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, etc.)
* Streaming media applications (YouTube, NetFlix, video sites, etc.)
* Application hosting - Using your account to host FTP or Web servers
There are a few simple things you can do to reduce your Internet bandwidth usage and take that 3% chance down to zero.
File-Sharing
Turn off or uninstall the file-sharing component of peer-to-peer applications such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Limewire, BitTorrent, BearShare, Skype, Abcast, etc. Even if you aren't downloading much, it doesn't mean that a file-sharing program isn't running as a server and sharing files with the world. Also, simply turning off or disabling file sharing does not always turn off "ALL" file sharing. The safest bet is to uninstall peer-to-peer file sharing programs.
Protection
Protect your machine from vulnerabilities. Whether you're running special services or not, make sure your computer is not vulnerable to viruses or attacks. If you download software from a web site, be careful of your source. The software may be ripe with viruses, worms, spyware, or trojans that can infiltrate your machine and suck bandwidth. Always install the latest patches or upgrades for your operating system or programs that allow people to retrieve data from your machines.
Flash
Flash can be a very handy tool. There are some excellent entertainment and game sites online with great Flash objects to play with. Unfortunately, much of what Flash is used for today is advertising. Ever suddenly been startled by a loud unexpected ad while quietly browsing the web, it's almost always Flash. To make matters even worse, Flash can now be used to compromise your privacy.
If, like some people, you decide that the downsides of Flash (privacy invasion, loud annoying ads) simply outweigh the benefits (fun animations and games), you can simply uninstall it from your system. Unfortunately, some browsers will then prompt you to install Flash "EVERY" time you visit a page with Flash on it, which can be very annoying.
Ad-Blocking
Some people choose to use some sort of ad-blocking software. There are several out there and I won't try to list them all here, but among the most popular is AdBlock for Firefox. It works quite well. There are several out for Internet Explorer as well.
Monitor
WildBlue does make available Google Gadgets that can monitor your bandwidth usage, so whether you choose to act or not you will be able to monitor your usage and keep yourself on the good side of the Fair Access Policy
If you are new to WildBlue
Satellite Internet or have been thinking of subscribing to the service you may have become familiar with the term Fair Access Policy. The Fair Access Policy is really nothing to be feared, only 3% of all WildBlue users are ever affected by it.
