Sub Woofer What kind/type, how many watts sub-woofer i need?
I just got a Panasonic SA-HE100 receiver but I don't have a sub woofer and this is my first time setting up the home theatre system. Can someone please advise what type of sub-woofer I need and how many watts. Greatly appreciate it! Also, i have set up my speakers and everything sounds great i just need a Subwoofer for teh effects in movies.
Thanks!
A good sub is the secret to an impressive home theater.
But it's not about power, but driver size.
Look - shake a cookie sheet and you get a low whappa whappa sound. Shake a large sheet of sheet metal and you get a much lower sound.
The bigger the driver, the lower the frequency it can easily produce.
But people do not want a large sub in their room so they make subs with 8, 10 and 12 inch drivers and use lots of power to move them fast to create low frequency. This takes amps about 1,000 watts.
The better subs - have 15 or 18 inch drivers and only a few hundred watts.
So it's a trade off.
My advice: go to www.partsexpress.com and look into one of their Dayton subwoofer kits. For about 1/3 the price you can assemble your own subwoofer and have fun doing it.
The other place is to buy a SVS Woofers or HSU Research sub. These are internet brands that have a lot of respect both in the home theater and music community.
