I want a direct-drive model, with a decent weighted platter (i.e no plastics), and preferably full automation and anti-skate control.
Any audiophiles care to help a newbie?
a weighted platter is counter productive to direct drive. use a weighted platter only with belt drive. automation? any coupling of the tone arm to mechanical aperatus lead to rubbing noise in the playback. i used a semi automatic Sony and found it could not play transcription disks because they have the start groove near the center and spiral out. every time i tried to start, the player thought the record was done and would return the arm! once you have sufficient needle weight to assure proper tracking, skating should not be an issue unless you dealing with badly warped discs.
